For the first time ever, Mercedes-Benz is bringing its A-Class line of cars to North America. In foreign markets, the A-Class is entering its fourth generation. This generation brings sharper styling, a refined interior, and new technology.
Mercedes calls the new design style “Sensual Purity”, which was debuted on the CLS. To see the styling progression, one can use the CLA as a benchmark. The A-Class features standard “Multibeam” LED headlights similar to those found on the new CLS – adding an aggressive, chiseled look to the front fascia. Around back, LED taillights feature horizontal proportions that create the perception of a wider rear end. 17 inch wheels come standard but there is also the option for 18 inch sport wheels.
The A-Class receives a modern appointment throughout the cabin. The most notable feature inside is the MBUX system which is essentially a digital display spanning two screens. On one screen, important driver information such as the speedometer is displayed and, on the other, all multimedia functionality can be viewed and controlled. Once an amenity only reserved for the S-Class, its progression down the model chain creates an affordable luxury experience.
The benefits of the A-Class over the CLA or GLA are its hatchback practicality with sedan-like performance characteristics. These sporty traits are achieved with a turbocharged 4-cylinder that produces 210 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, mated to a 7 speed dual clutch transmission. The suspension adds to the driving dynamics with a McPherson front suspension and Dynamic Select standard. 4matic is also available to help with all-weather performance.
The A-Class is expected to arrive in fall of 2018.
